Summary / Abstract:

ENThe determined and concerted efforts of Ferdynand Ruszczyć' to establish a Faculty of Fine Arts at the Stefan Batory University, followed by the task of finding an appropriate team of professors, lecturers and technical assistants, were crowned with success in October 1919. A location was found for the reborn department in the former Bernardine monastery overlooking the River Wilenka. Although Ruszczyc, as dean of the department, was able to find teachers of architecture, painting and sculpture, in spite of initial difficulties, staff teaching print-making changed frequently, and during the initial period of the department the School of Print-Making comprised its weakest element. Only in 1931, when Jerzy Hoppen (1891-1969) was appointed director of the Department of Print-Making and Decorative Arts, did artistic print-making in Wilno acquire its distinctive character. It became recognisable, and acquired the title of the Wilno Workshop of Print-Making. Hoppen had a developed his own view of art, and furthermore possessed a superb technical ability, particularly in incised and etched metallic techniques. It is also necessary to record that he was a conservator and lover of architectural monuments, which in turn influenced to a considerable degree the subject-matter which he undertook in his own works.
