Title:
Attitudes of parents towards school maturity of their children
Summary / Abstract:

ENThe goal of this research is to define the psychological attitudes of the parents of underfives towards their children readiness for primary school. Respondents of the research are 100 parents of underfives. The method used to accomplish the research was psychological inquiry. It was composed on the basis of indicators showing readiness of children to go to school. The method of two variables and cross tables were used in order to analyze the results of research. Correlation rate is used as a measurement of coherence to measure the interdependency of two variables. SPSS. 70 was applied for analyzing the data. Results of the research proved that there were statistically significant differences in attitudes of the parents and their education. Parents with college or university level education (group 1) are likely to combine several ways of getting information about child's development. Their input into child's development is bigger than the one of the parents in group 2. Parents in group 2 have high school or lower level of education. They are likely to get most of information about child's development from acquaintances. The first group of respondents had an attitude, that child must be prepared for school by the family and preparatory class. Second group had an attitude that starting to attend the school is a start of heavy and exhausting work. There is a positive interdependency between attitude of parents and family composition. The hypothesis stating that full families dedicate more attention for child's development than partial families was proven. Parents in partial families were more likely to trust the preschool institutions on preparing the child for the school.Research showed that input of parents into developing child competence does not depend on child's gender. However, this input depends on number of children: single children were more educated and developed at home. Three main spheres of development were defined while researching the attitude of parents towards success of the children. They are physical, cognitive and social. Research proved that the education of respondents does not influence their attitude towards the spheres are most important in order to be successful in school. Also there was no correlation between family composition and attitude towards most important spheres of development found. All parents not depending on their education level or family composition stated that preparation of children for school is based on developing their cognitive skills. Keywords: psychological attitude, school maturity, spheres of development (physical, cognitive, psycho-social). [From the publication]
