ENOne of the major issues in our modern society is the deteriorating health and level of physical activity of students. During the last decades young people are choosing more passive ways to spend their free time. The aim of the research is to evaluate the attitude of 8th grade students of Šiauliai city progymnasium to health and physical activity. 870 students of 8th grade of Šiauliai city progymnasium were interviewed by questionnaire (428 girls, 438 boys). The analysis of the research data was performed using the statistical package SPSS (Statistical Packet for Social Sciences 19.0). Percent, Chi-square (χ2) and Mann-Whitney nonparametric criteria, mean and standard deviation (SD) were calculated in the work at the significance level of p ≤ 0.05. It was found that almost twice as many girls compared to boys more often complain of headaches (χ2 = 52.037; df = 4; p = 0.001), dizziness (χ2 = 48.829; df = 4; p = 0.001), back pain (χ2 = 20.547; df = 4; p = 0.001), gastric pain (χ2 = 28.595; df = 4; p = 0.001), abdominal pain (χ2 = 52.856; df = 4; p = 0.001). Boys are more likely to complain about these complaints sometimes, as well as twice as many guys as girls never complain about these complaints. The study sought to find out whether respondents believe that physical activity enhances health. The nonparametric criterion Mann-Whitney was applied to clarify this view. There were statistically significant differences in terms of gender (Z = -2.761, p = 0.017) that more boys than girls believe that physical activity enhances health. Such data were revealed by the average rank, which was 420.17 among the girls group and 443.64 among the boys.Further was revealed how students themselves rate their physical activity or whether they are physically active. Evaluating the results of the study, it is observed that students evaluate their health and physical activity positively, although it is observed that the attitude and evaluation of boys was much better than that of girls. Students are more likely to complain of various ailments such as headaches, stomach, abdominal and back pain and lack of sleep, tension, mood swings. Boys are more likely to complain of physical exhaustion. The analysis of the studentsʼ leisure time choices and hobbies revealed a difference in choice in terms of gender. Boys are more likely to choose physically active activities such as swimming, running, cycling, training, and girls are more likely to travel with family or friends and more likely to choose passive pastimes such as socializing, surfing the web, and reading books. It is observed that almost one in four students choose to spend time in front of the TV and almost a quarter generally like not to do anything in their free time. [From the publication]
