ENVilnius Academy of Arts has a beautiful tradition of publishing books giving an insight into the worldview of renowned artists, graduates and teachers of Vilnius Academy of Arts and providing an overview of their work. A number of such books have already been published. The exploration of the work of Tadas Baginskas represents an attempt to look at the unexpected twists and turns of the creative life of this prominent architect and designer. Tadas Baginskas is regarded as the pioneer of professional Lithuanian design and design educator. His work covers two periods, the Soviet era and the period that coincided with the restoration of the independent state of Lithuania. He created a large number of significant works and his body of work ranges from furniture and interiors to environmental and graphic design to architecture. What unites all of the fields of his creative explorations is a systematic/problem-oriented design which allows the artist to transcend his artistic self expression and encourages him to reflect on a close relationships between the creator, the producer and the consumer as well as the addressee of his work - an individual using the items that the designer himself created. The majority of Baginskas's artistic career coincided with the Soviet era. During that period, Baginskas created furniture and luminaire designs, interiors for public spaces, exhibition design projects, including designs for the World's EXPO shows in Montreal and Osaka. As the sentiment of liberation intensified in Lithuania, Baginskas took it upon himself to bring together a design community and initiated the founding of the association of designers of Lithuania independent from the Soviet rule. After the restoration of Lithuania's independence, he successfully continued his teaching career, served as the head of the Department of Design at Vilnius Academy of Arts and created design projects for private clients. Baginskas remains committed to his mission of developing professional art of design in Lithuania, raising public awareness about the country's iconic design works, ensuring that young talented graduates find their place on the design map of Lithuania and beyond, and that Lithuania is able to offer intelligence, i. e. Lithuanian-made design works, instead of just selling relatively cheap labour. He invites us to come to realization that professional design is beneficial for everyone both economically and culturally as professionals design not only items but also experiences and lifestyles and help to shape the habits and the worldview as a whole.
