ENHistorical realia relating to the position of Jews in Lithuania from the time of the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth form an introduction to the issues dealt with in this essay. The situation of Jews in the 1930s is shown against this background, as are the factors affecting the development of anti-Semitic attitudes. Their manifestations are set out: the limitation of Jews’ roles in the economy, critical articles in several Lithuanian publications relating to Jewish customs and making reference to stereotypical understandings of Jews and their distinguishing features. The text is connected with discussions relating to the book "Mūsiškiai” o zagładzie litewskich Żydów w latach 1941-1944 by Rūta Vanagaitė and to Lithuanians’ responsibility for the Holocaust.
