Summary / Abstract:

ENSince 1990, rural Lithuania has experienced a transformation due to a change inthe agricultural model, when social and economic reforms were launched towards creatinga market economy. Agricultural activity started concentrating in territories with the bestsocial and physical conditions. A type of latifundiumagrarian structure has formed innorthern and central Lithuania. The transition from the collective model into the familyfarming model in western and south-western Lithuania developed faster than in otherregions by the active formation of medium and large family farming. Small familyfarming has overtaken the collective agricultural exploitation in eastern, southern andcoastal regions. Landscape structure analysis supported the results of socio-geographicalresearch in rural spaces. During 1995-2009, the decline of the agrarian land area was themost intensive and an increase in the average size of land plot was the least visible inthe morainic hill landscape (eastern Lithuania), the most unproductive compared to theother investigated landscape types: clayey plains and downy clayey plains (central andnorthern Lithuania). Key words: socioeconomic transition, post-Soviet rural spaces, agrarian landscape, landuse change, Lithuania. [From the publication]
