ENIn 2018, a field survey was conducted in the Natural Museum of Lithuania courtyard, which lies on the grounds of the Vilnius castles along with their fortifications, buildings, and structural remnants. Roughly 880 m2 were surveyed using georadar and 13 trial trenches, which were from 2.14 m2 to 26 m2 in size, a total of 164 m2. The excavation was conducted down to the level of the masonry walls or existing utility lines. The depth of the trenches varied from 40 cm to 2.75 m. 18th–20th century fill layers predominated in them; in places probing reached earlier layers, which should be connected with the wooden city, but they were not excavated. Over 700 15th–20th century finds, the bulk of which consisted of household pottery and structural ceramics, were collected. Coins (mostly John II Casimir shillings and their planchets), bullets from various periods, empty cartridges, shell fragments, grey sandstone and granite architectural elements, and various everyday items were also found. It was determined that to the N part of service building II as well as the N and central connecting buildings were narrow (4–5 m wide), gallery-type structures. The foundations of the connecting buildings were laid in different stages rather than all at one time. The S part of service building II was wider, its foundation could have been 9–10 m wide. The steps leading to the suspected cellar was discovered in the N part of the castellan’s house. [From the publication]
