ENSt. John the Baptist Church is built on an axis that includes Plungė Old Town square which is situated 400 meters away from the church. The two-tower red brick building made the western end of Vytautas’ Street turn, so that all the majesty of the church could rise in the street perspective in front of everyone. The construction of the Church of John the Baptist took as long as 34 years. The beginning of its design has the documental witness by the sketch designed by architect Karl Eduard Strandmann in 1899. The building project submitted by the Kaunas Provincial Construction Department has been confirmed by the Russian emperor in 1903. The construction works stopped in the fall of 191 and resumed only in 1922. The previous project has been redrawn and approved again according to the regulation of the time. The article reveals the history of changes of the building design of the church. After a long period of construction (the church was consecrated in 1933), without a dome tower provided in the primary project, the church is characterized by monumental heavy proportions, and neither the decoration of the vertical shovel pediments, nor thin towers above the presbytery can relieve this weight. The new church has been incorporated into the urban fabric of the city by architect Steponas Stulginskis. A brick church was built on the road to Kretinga, next to the old wooden one. During the construction period, a temporaiy detour was used. The parishioners sought to legalize to legalize it as permanent street after the church was built. Thanks to the stubbornness of the parishioners of Plungė and the persistence of the architect S. Stulginskis the optimal result was achieved. The city center stretched from the Old Town square to the church, so a new urban quality in Plungė has been created. [From the publication]
