ENJózef Ignacy Kraszewski — a recognized writer, creator of the historiography of the Polish art, a respected journalist and collector — belongs to a large group of representatives of the European intelligentsia who were interested in a new way of image production — photography. During 1853-1859, Kraszewski lived in Żytomierz, and it was at that time that he developed a particularly close contact with Karol Beyer from Warsaw. Their common interests in archaeology, numismatics and collecting were strengthened by lively correspondence. One of the key interests turned out to be photography. Beyer sent to the writer early prints on salt paper, and Kraszewski included them in his collection of drawings and prints which were completed long time ago. Collected reproductions of the modern Polish art, the portraits of modern personalities, and images of historical monuments turned out to be priceless and unique treasure, because they contain the oldest photographs of the authors who were active in the former Republic of Poland. Among the photographs from that period in the famous Catalogue d'une Collection Iconographique Polonaise, there are also works by the amateur draftsman and photographer Józef Sobkiewicz who lived in Żytomierz. The aim of the research work outlined in this article is, firstly, to identify and analyse all the photographs in the Dresden catalogue from 1865; secondly, to define Kraszewski's views on the new image production technique and to describe the evolution of his interest in photography.
