Summary / Abstract:

Esminiai žodžiai: lietuvių liaudies meno rinkiniai, tautodailės rinkimo ekspedicijos, tautinis stilius, XX a. tarpukario dizainas, Tadas Daugirdas, Antanas Jaroševičius. [Iš leidinio]

ENThe article discusses the folk artefacts collection as a boost of creativity. At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the collection of folk art was a widespread phenomenon in Lithuania, associated with the ideology of neo-romanticism and the maturing consciousness of the nation. Folk art was collected by various members of Lithuanian society: landlords, clergy, businessmen, intellectuals, artists. Interest in the folk art was determined by the personal need and the obligation of the institutions (Lithuanian Art Society, Lithuanian Art Creators' Association, M. K. Čiurlionis Gallery, Chamber of Agriculture). Antanas Jaroševičius, Tadas Daugirdas, Antanas Žmuidzinavičius, Adomas Varnas, Petras Rimša, Kazys Šimonis, Antanas Tamošaitis and others contributed significantly to the promotion of the folk style. They can be considered as symbolic figures in the reviving of the folk art traditions of the first half of the 20th century. These artists contributed to the development of the early Lithuanian applied art and design. They collected and studied folk artefacts, and interpreted their elements - composition structure, proportions, colour combinations, patterns - in the personal art works, and some of them created examples for the craftsmen.Folk artefacts had a major impact on the artist's self-awareness and artistic expression. They idealized the national heritage. The existing psychological relationship with the collected works encouraged to incorporate the folk art forms in their own works; in almost all cases, the attitude towards the collectibles became the precursor of the national style, as there was a desire to ensure the continuity of the tradition. The artists) activity was characterized by diversity — they created small decorative works and monumental works (murals, stained glass, and monuments). The relationship with the original material varied from a careful reproduction to a free interpretation of the folk art forms. The national features in the applied art and design from the first half of the 20th century had a great influence on the contemporaries as well as artists and craftsmen of the following generations. Nevertheless, the authors who interpreted the elements of the folk art contributed to the inclusion of the folk art in the 20th century culture. [From the publication]
