ENThe article is devoted to the analysis of the literary aspect of the representation of the image of Vytautas the Great in late medieval chronography. The image of Vytautas was studied on the basis of chronicles and chronicles of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, published in volumes 32 and 35 of the Complete Collection of Russian Chronicles. It is concluded that the sources reveal the whole identity of Vytautas as a consistent and methodical state strategist, a brave warrior, an intelligent and insightful politician. It was Veliky Vytautas who was best able to take advantage of the opportunities provided by history and opened the world to Lithuania as a powerful state. The image of Vytautas is compared with the image of Grand Duke Dmitry Donskoy, glorified in the face of saints, and in many ways similar to Vytautas.
