ENViešvilė Cemetery I (Burial Ground) belongs to the Scalvian (Scalovian) community settled in the Nemunas lower reaches in the 9th–12th centuries. During several years, 23 cremations and inhumations in a wind driven dune have been studied. They seem to belong to a rather narrow chronological period, i.e. the 10-11th centuries. Based on material taken from one cremation (grave no. 10), an attempt is made by the author of the present article to discuss the peculiarities of burying customs characteristic of the Scalvians and reflecting the structure of the society or community that had inhabited this cultural region.
