ENIn a postmodern world where the main motifs of modern culture are urgency, mobility and globalisation, people are reluctant to be attached to places and other people. This encourages a closer look at communities that are closely related to a place, which construct distinct, relatively closed spaces, and which build longstanding relationships between its members based on tradition. The cultural institutions selected for this study are such communities: libraries, museums and cultural centres. The article aims to show how cultural workers construct a place both through general historical moments in community life and through individual experiences. The relevance of the study is based on the practical benefits of better understanding the attitudes of members of the professional community towards their workplace and their colleagues, to assess the strength of the relationship between the place and the individual in cultural institutions. Material was collected between 2018 and 2020 using the field research method. Conversations, questionnaires, semi-structured and in-depth interviews, and participatory observation were the methods used. A total of 190 cultural workers from 60 different Lithuanian libraries, museums and cultural centres were interviewed. The study found that a sense of home is best revealed through each respondent’s individual experience in relation to their co-workers. Home is most clearly constructed through an attachment to current and former colleagues and managers, and defined by a positive relationship. An integral part of the concept of home is nostalgic memories, which show that home is usually experienced not in the ‘here and now’ but in the past. Still, the past is very important and relevant today, as respondents understand the present through the lens of past experience. The connection between the respondents and its strength and intensity is inseparable from the aspect of time. Decades of being together determine the attachment of cultural workers both to a place where they feel safe and well, and to each other. Connected by local history, people, experiences and cultural features, cultural workers constantly recreate the local past through institutional festivities, commemorative activities, and communication between past and present community members. These repetitive rituals actualise the past, make history meaningful, and unite members of the community. The respondents put the greatest emphasis not only on the aspects of history of which they themselves were a part, but also on those which seem important to them, which were conveyed by an authoritative figure, and which conform with their values. The past heroes of cultural institutions are not only important personalities who remember the local history and culture, they are also those who have a personal influence on the professional identity and internal traditions of cultural workers. Through their ideas, place of residence and experiences conveyed by these people, these personalities are important to the respondents. They are viewed both seriously and with humour, both highlighted and as a part of the usual established order, but they are constantly in the lives of members of the community. Keywords: cultural workers, place, home, professional communities. [From the publication]
